How do I hear God through the Bible?

By Matthew (Tolu) Olowoyeye

Scripture

Hebrews 4:12

Hearing God through the Bible isn't about looking for secret messages or a magic formula; it's about engaging with His living Word with an open heart and a humble spirit. The Scriptures are God's primary means of revealing Himself, His character, His will, and His purposes to humanity. As you read, ask the Holy Spirit to illuminate the text, helping you understand its timeless truth and apply its principles to your specific life situation. It's a dialogue, not a monologue, where He speaks through what you read.

Begin by approaching the Bible not just as a historical document or a book of rules, but as a personal letter from your Heavenly Father. Start with an attitude of expectation, believing that God desires to communicate with you. Consider reading a book of the Bible systematically, like the Gospel of John or the book of Acts, to get a fuller context. Don't rush; ponder what you read. What does this passage reveal about God? What does it teach me about myself? What truth is being conveyed that I need to embrace or act upon?

Meditation plays a crucial role in hearing God's voice. This isn't Eastern meditation, but rather a thoughtful, prayerful dwelling on a particular verse or passage, allowing its truth to sink deep into your heart and mind. Ask yourself: "How does this apply to my current struggles, decisions, or relationships?" Sometimes, a specific word or phrase will stand out, resonating with a situation you're facing. This 'aha!' moment is often the Holy Spirit making God's word personal and alive for you.

Finally, hearing God through the Bible also involves obedience. As you understand what He is communicating, respond in faith by putting it into practice. This creates a cycle where obedience leads to deeper understanding, which in turn leads to greater intimacy with God. Regular, consistent engagement with the Scriptures, coupled with prayer and a willingness to obey, will sharpen your spiritual ears and enable you to discern God’s voice more clearly day by day.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, open my heart and mind as I read Your Word. Help me to hear Your voice clearly and understand Your truths for my life. Grant me the grace to obey what You reveal. In Jesus' name, amen.
