How do I pray Scripture back to God?
By Matthew (Tolu) Olowoyeye
ScripturePhilippians 4:6-7
Praying Scripture back to God is a beautiful and powerful way to engage with Him, showing our trust in His Word and His promises. It's not about reminding God of what He's said, but rather aligning our hearts and our requests with His revealed will. When we pray using His own words, we can be confident that our prayers are in accordance with His desires, strengthening our faith and giving us greater assurance. It deepens our understanding of His character and His heart for us.
To do this practically, you can start by reading a passage of Scripture. As you read, identify key verses or phrases that speak to you or address a specific need or situation. For example, if you're struggling with anxiety, you might turn to . Then, rephrase that Scripture as a prayer, personalizing it. Instead of just reciting the verse, turn it into a direct address to God, expressing your desires and belief based on what His Word says.
For instance, from , you could pray, "Father, Your Word tells me not to be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving, to let my requests be made known to You. So, Lord, I bring my anxieties about [mention specific situation] to You now. I thank You that You are attentive to my cry." This transforms a passage into a living, breathing conversation with your Creator, grounded in truth.
This practice not only helps us pray more effectively but also immerses us more deeply in God's Word, allowing it to dwell richly within us. It’s a dynamic interplay where the Spirit uses the written Word to inform our spoken prayers, and our prayers in turn cement God's truth in our hearts. It builds our spiritual muscles and fosters an intimate communion with the One who authored the very words we speak back to Him.
Prayer
Father, thank You for Your living and powerful Word. Teach me how to pray Your Scriptures back to You, so my prayers align with Your perfect will and bring You glory. In Jesus' name, amen.
