How do I keep a prayer journal?
By Matthew (Tolu) Olowoyeye
ScripturePsalm 119:10-11
Keeping a prayer journal is a beautiful way to deepen your walk with God and record His faithfulness. Start by finding a notebook you love, it doesn't have to be fancy, and choose a consistent time each day, even just 10-15 minutes, when you can be alone with God without distractions. Begin by prayerfully reading a short passage of Scripture; this helps center your heart and mind on His word and leading. You might even jot down a verse that particularly speaks to you.
Next, categorize your prayers. Some people use sections for 'Adoration' (praising God for who He is), 'Confession' (acknowledging sins and asking for forgiveness), 'Thanksgiving' (listing specific blessings), and 'Supplication' (praying for yourself and others). Writing down your thoughts, struggles, hopes, and even your conversations with God helps to articulate what's on your heart and creates a tangible record. Don't worry about perfect grammar or profound insights; this is a private space between you and the Lord.
Over time, your journal becomes a precious testament to God's hand in your life. As you revisit past entries, you'll see how He answered prayers, provided guidance, and carried you through difficult seasons. This not only builds your faith but also provides encouragement when you face new challenges. It's a wonderful tool for spiritual reflection and discerning God's patterns and purposes through the journey of your faith.
Remember, a prayer journal is a tool, not a rule. The goal is connection with God, not perfect journaling. Be flexible, let it evolve with you, and allow it to be a special place where your heart meets His. It’s an exercise in intentionality, inviting God into every aspect of your life and observing His faithful responses, strengthening your trust in Him day by day.
Prayer
Lord, thank You for the gift of prayer and the desire You instill in us to connect with You. Help me to be consistent and genuine in my journaling, using it as a means to draw closer to Your heart and remember Your faithfulness. In Jesus' name, amen.
