How do I fast biblically?

By Matthew (Tolu) Olowoyeye

Scripture

Matthew 6:16-18

Fasting, at its core, is a spiritual discipline where we voluntarily abstain from food, or sometimes other things, for a period to draw closer to God. It's not about twisting God's arm to get what we want, but rather about humbling ourselves before Him, seeking His face, and recalibrating our hearts. Biblical fasting is often accompanied by prayer, meditation on God's Word, and a genuine desire for spiritual growth or breakthrough. It's a way of saying, "God, You are more essential to me than even physical nourishment." This heart attitude is crucial for truly biblical fasting.

When considering how to fast, begin with clear intentions. Why are you fasting? Is it for repentance, seeking direction, interceding for others, or expressing deep devotion? teaches us to fast in secret, not to be seen by others. The focus should be on our private communion with God. Also, consider the type of fast that is appropriate for you. A full fast (water only), a partial fast (abstaining from certain foods or meals), or even a Daniel fast (vegetables and water) are all valid biblical forms. Your physical health should always be taken into account; consult a doctor if you have any medical conditions.

Preparation is key. Before you begin, spend time in prayer, confessing any known sins and asking God to purify your heart and align your desires with His. During the fast, devote the time you would normally spend eating to prayer, Scripture reading, and worship. Expect spiritual challenges, as fasting often stirs up spiritual warfare. Be prepared to lean more heavily on God's grace and strength. Remember, the ultimate goal is not just the act of abstaining, but a deeper encounter with the Lord and a heightened spiritual sensitivity.

Finally, approach the end of your fast thoughtfully. Break your fast gradually, especially if you've done a prolonged water-only fast, by reintroducing foods slowly to avoid physical discomfort. Reflect on what God has taught you during this time. Has your faith grown? Have you gained greater clarity or peace? Carry these lessons forward into your daily life. Biblical fasting is a powerful tool for spiritual transformation when engaged with a humble heart and a focus on God.

Prayer

Lord, thank You for the discipline of fasting, a pathway to drawing closer to You. Help me to fast with a pure heart, seeking Your face above all else. May my times of surrender lead to deeper intimacy with You and a greater understanding of Your will for my life. In Jesus' name, amen.
