How do I persevere through spiritual dryness?

By Matthew (Tolu) Olowoyeye

Scripture

Psalm 42:1-2

It's completely normal to experience seasons of spiritual dryness, and you are not alone in feeling this way. Even the most devoted believers have times when God feels distant, prayer feels like an empty exercise, and Bible reading lacks its usual spark. Instead of seeing it as a sign of failure, consider it an opportunity to deepen your faith. These periods can refine your reliance on God, moving you from an emotional faith to one rooted in steadfast truth and commitment, even when feelings are absent.

During these times, resist the urge to withdraw from spiritual disciplines. Though they may feel dry, continue to engage in prayer, even if it's just a simple cry for help or a recitation of God's character. Continue reading God's Word, perhaps focusing on passages that speak of His faithfulness or past deliverances. Sometimes, our feelings lag behind our actions. By persistently engaging, you are sowing seeds that God will water in His time, trusting that His Word is always living and active, regardless of our immediate perception.

Another practical step is to intentionally connect with other believers. Share what you're experiencing with a trusted spiritual mentor or a close friend in faith. Often, hearing another's perspective or receiving encouragement can be like a breath of fresh air. They might offer a new insight, a comforting word, or simply remind you of God's unwavering love. Isolation can amplify feelings of dryness, whereas fellowship can remind us of the larger body of Christ and God's consistent presence within it.

Ultimately, persevere by remembering God's character. He is faithful, even when we are faithless (). His love for you does not fluctuate with your feelings or spiritual temperature. Spiritual dryness is often a season, not a permanent state. Keep your eyes fixed on Jesus, knowing that He understands your struggles and promises to walk with you through every valley. He will bring you through this, and your faith will emerge stronger and more resilient.

Prayer

Lord, I ask for strength to persevere through this season of dryness. Help me lean on Your faithfulness, not my feelings, and trust that You are near even when You feel distant. In Jesus' name, amen.
