How do I use my gifts without pride?
By Matthew (Tolu) Olowoyeye
ScriptureJames 1:17
It's wonderful that you're thinking about using your gifts for God's glory while also guarding against pride. The key is to remember the source of your abilities. Every good and perfect gift comes from above, from the Father of lights (). Recognizing that your talents are not self-made, but graciously given by God, helps to cultivate a heart of humility and gratitude. When you see your gifts as stewardship rather than ownership, it shifts your perspective from self-exaltation to thankful service.
Secondly, focus on serving others rather than seeking recognition for yourself. True humility isn't thinking less of yourself, but thinking of yourself less. When you use your gifts to uplift, encourage, and build up the Body of Christ, your attention naturally moves away from personal accolades. Consider how Jesus, though God, "made Himself of no reputation, taking the form of a bondservant" (). His example shows us that true greatness in God's kingdom is found in humble, selfless service.
Another practical step is to consistently give all the glory back to God. After you've used your gifts, whether in teaching, leading, creating, or helping, consciously acknowledge that it was by His strength and grace that you were able to do so. This can be done through prayer, direct verbal affirmation, or simply by maintaining an inner posture of gratitude. When others praise you, gently redirect that praise to the Giver, saying something like, "All glory to God! He enabled it."
Finally, stay rooted in community and accountability. Surround yourself with fellow believers who are committed to Christlike character, and invite them to speak into your life. True friends in Christ will celebrate your gifts while also gently reminding you to guard your heart against pride. They can help you maintain a balanced perspective, ensuring that your motivation remains pure and your focus stays on honoring God, not yourself.
Prayer
Father, help me to always remember that every good gift comes from You. Guide me to use my talents and abilities, not for my own glory, but solely for Yours and for the blessing of others, in Jesus' name, amen.
