How do I find my spiritual gifts?

By Matthew (Tolu) Olowoyeye

Scripture

1 Peter 4:10

Discovering your spiritual gifts begins not with introspection alone, but with a heart surrendered to God and a desire to serve His kingdom. The New Testament teaches that the Holy Spirit sovereignly bestows these gifts as He wills, for the common good of the body of Christ. So, the first step is to recognize that these gifts are from Him, not earned, and are meant to build up others. Pray persistently, asking God to reveal to you what gifts He has already placed within you for His glory.

Engage actively in various ministries within your local church and community. Often, our spiritual gifts become evident when we step out in faith and participate. You might find yourself naturally drawn to certain areas of service, or perhaps you'll observe that others are particularly blessed or encouraged by your contributions in a specific way. Pay attention to what energizes you, what you feel a burden for, and what brings impact to others. Experimenting with different roles allows the Holy Spirit to highlight where your unique anointing lies.

Seek feedback and affirmation from mature believers and church leaders who know you well. Sometimes, others can discern our gifts more clearly than we can ourselves. They might see patterns in your service or identify strengths you've overlooked. Be open to their observations and insights, as their perspective can be a valuable confirmation of what God is doing in and through you. Their affirmation can provide clarity and encouragement as you seek to walk in the fullness of God's calling.

Finally, remember that spiritual gifts are not primarily for personal recognition but for the equipping of the saints and the edification of the church. As you discover and develop your gifts, commit to using them faithfully for God's purposes. Don't be afraid to step out in faith and allow the Holy Spirit to work through you. The journey of discovering your gifts is an ongoing process of growth, surrender, and joyful service to the One who gave them.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, I pray for clarity and wisdom as I seek to understand the spiritual gifts You have bestowed upon me. Help me to use these gifts to serve others and build up Your church. In Jesus' name, amen.
