How do I find good mentors?

By Matthew (Tolu) Olowoyeye

Scripture

Proverbs 11:14

Finding good mentors is a journey of intentionality and prayer, recognizing that God often uses people to guide us. Begin by looking within your current circles, your church, Bible study, or even Christian community groups. Observe those who exemplify Christ-like character, wisdom, and spiritual maturity in areas you desire to grow. It's not about finding someone perfect, but someone who genuinely walks with the Lord and can offer a seasoned perspective rooted in biblical truth and life experience. Pray specifically for God to open doors and reveal the right individuals.

Once you identify potential mentors, approach them with humility and a clear understanding of what you are seeking. Instead of asking, "Will you be my mentor?" which can feel overwhelming, consider starting with a more focused request like, "I really admire your faithfulness in [specific area]. Would you be open to an occasional coffee to discuss how you navigate challenges in that area?" This demonstrates respect for their time and allows for a natural relationship to develop, rather than an immediate, heavy commitment. Remember, mentorship often unfolds organically.

When a mentorship relationship begins to form, be prepared to be an active learner. Come with questions, be open to honest feedback, and be consistent in your interactions. A mentor's role is not to tell you what to do, but to help you think biblically, grow spiritually, and develop discernment. Value their wisdom, but always filter their advice through the lens of Scripture and prayer, recognizing that ultimately, God is your ultimate guide.

Cultivating a mentorship relationship is a two-way street that requires effort and graciousness from both parties. Be thankful for their time and investment, and be willing to serve them in return if opportunities arise. As you mature, remember the call to also become a mentor to others (), passing on the wisdom and grace you have received. This creates a beautiful cycle of discipleship within the body of Christ, strengthening each generation.

Prayer

Lord, help me to identify wise, godly individuals who can speak into my life. Grant me humility to learn and discernment to apply their wisdom according to Your Word. In Jesus' name, amen.
