What makes a leader biblical?
By Matthew (Tolu) Olowoyeye
Scripture1 Peter 5:2-3
A biblical leader, at their core, is characterized by a servant's heart, not a desire for personal glory or power. They understand that their position is a stewardship from God, entrusted to them for the good of those they lead. This servant-leadership is modeled by Jesus Himself, who came not to be served, but to serve and to give His life as a ransom for many. It's about prioritizing the spiritual growth, well-being, and genuine needs of the flock above their own interests, fostering an environment where individuals can flourish in their faith and God's purposes.
Furthermore, a biblical leader is deeply rooted in God's Word, allowing Scripture to be the ultimate guide for their decisions, teachings, and life. They are committed to sound doctrine, not swayed by popular opinion or fleeting trends, but steadfastly upholding truth. This commitment to biblical fidelity ensures that their leadership points people to Christ and aligns with God's perfect will, protecting the community from error and equipping them to live lives that honor Him. Their teaching isn't just informed by the Bible; it is the Bible, faithfully expounded and applied.
Humility and integrity are also non-negotiable marks of biblical leadership. A humble leader recognizes their dependence on God, admitting their weaknesses and seeking His wisdom. They are teachable, open to correction, and quick to give credit where credit is due, to God. Integrity means living a life that matches their words, demonstrating consistency between their public ministry and private conduct. This authenticity builds trust within the community, making them credible examples for others to follow, not just in word, but in deed and character.
Finally, a biblical leader is focused on multiplication and equipping. Their goal isn't to create followers who are dependent on them, but disciples who are equipped to serve, lead, and make disciples themselves. They invest in others, share responsibility, and empower people to use their God-given gifts for the building up of the body of Christ. This forward-looking perspective ensures the long-term health and growth of the community, as new leaders are raised up and the work of the gospel continues to advance through future generations.
Prayer
Dear Lord, please help me to cultivate a servant's heart and to walk in humility and integrity. Guide me by Your Word in all my steps, so that I may always point others to You. In Jesus' name, amen.
