How do I lead when I feel unqualified?

By Matthew (Tolu) Olowoyeye

Scripture

2 Corinthians 12:9-10

It's quite common to feel unqualified when called to leadership, especially in spiritual contexts. Moses, for instance, felt deeply inadequate when God called him to lead Israel out of Egypt, even arguing with God about his lack of eloquence. This feeling is not a sign of weakness, but often a sign of humility and a recognition that the task is bigger than our own abilities. It’s in this space of acknowledged insufficiency that God's power is most beautifully displayed, as He works through imperfect vessels to accomplish His perfect will.

Embrace this feeling not as a stumbling block, but as a stepping stone to greater reliance on God. True leadership in the Kingdom isn't about our self-sufficiency, but about our God-sufficiency. When we are aware of our limitations, we are more likely to seek divine wisdom, strength, and guidance. This posture of dependence doesn't diminish our role; rather, it elevates God's role in and through us, allowing His anointing to flow unhindered. Remember, God doesn't call the qualified; He qualifies the called.

Practical steps for leading when feeling unqualified involve cultivating a deep prayer life, diligently studying God's Word, and seeking wise counsel from mature believers. Invest time in personal growth, not just in skills, but in your character and spiritual formation. Focus on serving others with genuine love and humility, and allow your actions to flow from a heart submitted to Christ. As you faithfully steward the responsibilities given to you, God will equip and empower you for every good work.

Ultimately, your qualification comes from God, not from your own perceived abilities or past achievements. He has chosen you for a purpose, and His Spirit resides within you to empower you. Trust in His plan, lean on His strength, and remember that His grace is sufficient for you. Your willingness to step out in faith, despite your feelings of inadequacy, is a testament to your trust in Him, and that alone makes you more than qualified in His eyes.

Prayer

Father, I surrender my feelings of inadequacy to You. Help me to trust in Your strength and wisdom to lead effectively, knowing that You qualify those You call. Fill me with Your Spirit and guide my steps. In Jesus' name, amen.
