How do I love myself in a biblical way?

By Matthew (Tolu) Olowoyeye

Scripture

Mark 12:31

Loving yourself in a biblical way isn't about selfish indulgence or pride; it's about recognizing your inherent value as someone created in the image of God. This self-love means accepting God's assessment of you, understanding that He fearfully and wonderfully made you (). It involves appreciating the unique gifts, personality, and calling He has placed within you, not comparing yourself to others, but embracing the person He designed you to be. It's a foundational understanding that allows you to genuinely love others, as the command is to love your neighbor as yourself.

Practically, biblical self-love involves tending to your spiritual, emotional, and physical well-being. Spiritually, it means consistently spending time with God, nurturing your relationship with Him through prayer and His Word. Emotionally, it means developing healthy boundaries, practicing forgiveness, and processing difficult emotions in a God-honoring way. Physically, it means stewarding your body as a temple of the Holy Spirit, making wise choices about rest, nutrition, and activity, not out of vanity, but out of honoring God with your whole being.

This doesn't mean ignoring your flaws or denying your sinfulness. Biblical self-love acknowledges your brokenness and dependence on Christ for redemption and transformation. It’s a humble acceptance of grace, knowing that while you are a sinner, you are also dearly loved and redeemed by God. It’s understanding that true worth comes not from your achievements or external validation, but from your identity as a child of God, purchased by the blood of Jesus.

Ultimately, biblical self-love is rooted in God's love for you. As you grasp the depth of His unconditional love and acceptance, it flows into how you view and treat yourself. It’s a call to embrace your identity in Christ, allowing His truth to define you rather than the world's standards. This healthy, God-centered self-love empowers you to live a life of purpose, serving God and others from a place of wholeness and secure belonging.

Prayer

Dear Lord, help me to see myself through Your loving eyes, recognizing the worth You've placed within me. Guide me in stewarding my whole being for Your glory, so I can love You and others more fully. In Jesus' name, amen.
