How do I deal with unresolved anger?
By Matthew (Tolu) Olowoyeye
ScriptureEphesians 4:26-27
Unresolved anger can feel like a heavy burden, often leading to bitterness if not addressed. Acknowledge that these feelings are real and valid, but remember that God provides a path to process them constructively. Instead of suppressing or exploding, bring your anger before the Lord in honest prayer. Pour out your heart to Him, expressing the root causes of your frustration, hurt, or injustice. He can handle your raw emotions and offers a peace that surpasses natural understanding.
After pouring out your heart, take time to reflect on what might be fueling this anger. Is it a perceived injustice, a past wound, unmet expectations, or perhaps fear? Often, anger is a secondary emotion, masking deeper issues. The Holy Spirit is your ultimate Counselor; invite Him to reveal the underlying roots. This introspection, guided by Scripture and prayer, is crucial for understanding your emotional landscape and moving towards true healing and release.
Forgiveness is often a key step in releasing unresolved anger, not necessarily condoning the offense, but releasing the hold it has on you. This can be incredibly difficult, especially when the hurt is deep. Start by asking God to help you desire to forgive, even if you don't feel it yet. Forgiveness is a process, sometimes a daily choice, that gradually chips away at the bitterness and allows His healing grace to flow into those wounded places in your heart.
Finally, cultivate habits that promote peace and emotional well-being. This might involve setting healthy boundaries, communicating assertively (not aggressively), engaging in acts of service, or spending time in community with trusted believers who can offer support and accountability. Remember, transformation is a journey, and with God's help, you can learn to manage your anger in ways that honor Him and bring peace to your soul. He is always working for your good.
Prayer
Lord, I bring my unresolved anger before You today. Please help me to understand its roots, guide me in the process of forgiveness, and fill my heart with Your peace. In Jesus' name, amen.
