How do I overcome shame from my past?
By Matthew (Tolu) Olowoyeye
ScripturePsalm 103:12
Sweet friend, it's completely normal to carry burdens from our past, especially when they involve shame. We all have moments, choices, or experiences we deeply regret, and the enemy loves to use these memories to keep us trapped in guilt and self-condemnation. But here's the beautiful truth: God does not want you to live under that cloud. His desire for you is freedom, healing, and a restoration of joy, no matter what you've done or what has happened to you. His grace is far greater than any past mistake.
The first step to overcoming shame is to truly embrace God's forgiveness. If you have confessed your sins to Him, trust that He has forgiven you completely, blotting out every transgression. The Bible says He removes our sins as far as the east is from the west, remember? This isn't just a nice thought; it's a divine promise. Satan, the accuser, will try to remind you of your past, but you can boldly stand on God's word, knowing that in Christ, you are a new creation, and your old self is gone.
Secondly, consider seeking support from a trusted spiritual mentor, a pastor, or a mature Christian friend. Sometimes, bringing our shame into the light with a compassionate, non-judgmental person can be incredibly liberating. They can help remind you of God's truth, pray with you, and affirm your identity in Christ. There's power in shared vulnerability within a safe community, as it counters the isolation that shame often thrives on, allowing for deeper healing and accountability.
Finally, focus on living in the present and moving forward with purpose. Instead of dwelling on what was, ask God to show you how you can honor Him now. Engage in activities that align with your new identity in Christ, serving others, studying His Word, and sharing His love. Every step you take in obedience and faithfulness reinforces the truth of your redemption and weakens the hold of past shame. Remember, your past does not define your future; Jesus does.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, thank You for Your complete forgiveness and the freedom You offer from past shame. Please help me to fully embrace Your grace and walk in the new identity You've given me. In Jesus' name, amen.
