What is the assurance of salvation?
By Matthew (Tolu) Olowoyeye
Scripture1 John 5:13
The assurance of salvation is the Spirit-given confidence in your heart that you are truly a child of God, your sins are forgiven, and you possess eternal life through faith in Jesus Christ. It’s not just a hopeful wish, but a deep spiritual certainty that withstands doubts and trials. This assurance isn't based on your good works or perfect performance, but entirely on the finished work of Christ on the cross and the promises of God's Word. It brings peace, joy, and freedom from the fear of condemnation, enabling you to live boldly for Him.
This blessed assurance comes primarily through the witness of the Holy Spirit in our hearts, confirming our adoption into God’s family. The Spirit convicts us of sin, leads us to repentance, and then testifies with our spirit that we are God’s children (). It also grows as we consistently live a life that reflects our faith, obeying God’s commands, loving one another, and growing in Christlike character. These fruits of the Spirit aren't the cause of our salvation but rather the evidence of a transformed heart and genuine faith.
Furthermore, studying and believing the promises of God in His Word greatly strengthens our assurance. Scriptures clearly state that "whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life" () and that "He who has the Son has life" (). By regularly meditating on these truths and understanding God's faithfulness, we build a solid foundation for our confidence. Our assurance is anchored in God’s unchanging character and His unfailing Word, not in our fluctuating feelings or experiences.
When doubts arise, and they will, remember to look to Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith. Remind yourself of the objective truth of His sacrifice and resurrection, and the covenant He established for you. Confess any known sin, reaffirm your faith in Him, and pray for the Holy Spirit to renew your assurance. God desires for His children to live in the joy and peace of their salvation, and He will faithfully confirm His promises to all who genuinely trust in Him.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, thank You for the incredible gift of salvation through Your Son, Jesus Christ. I pray for a deepening of my assurance, that I may rest securely in Your love and promises. Let Your Holy Spirit continually testify within me that I am truly Your child. In Jesus' name, amen.
