Can a true Christian lose their salvation?
By Matthew (Tolu) Olowoyeye
ScriptureJohn 10:27-29
This is a question that brings much anxiety to the hearts of believers, but the good news of the Gospel offers profound assurance. The Bible teaches that salvation is not something we earn or maintain through our own perfect performance, but rather it is a gift from God, received through faith in Jesus Christ. When we place our trust in Him, God performs a spiritual regeneration within us, making us new creations. This new life is secured by God's power, not by our fleeting strength.
Scripture consistently emphasizes God's faithfulness and His power to keep those He has saved. For example, Jesus Himself said, "My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me. And I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; neither shall anyone snatch them out of My hand" (). This promise speaks to the unshakeable security found in Christ. Our salvation is not dependent on our ability to perfectly cling to Him, but on His perfect hold on us. He is the one who initiates, sustains, and completes our salvation.
While we may stumble, backslide, or even enter periods of spiritual lukewarmness, these seasons do not equate to a loss of salvation for a true believer. Our Heavenly Father disciplines His children, and part of that discipline is to draw us back to Himself when we wander. A true Christian will always have the Holy Spirit indwelling them, convicting them of sin and leading them to repentance. The mark of genuine faith is not perfection, but a heart that, despite its failures, continually turns back to God.
Therefore, we can rest in the glorious assurance that our salvation is eternally secure in Christ. Our salvation is sealed by the Holy Spirit until the day of redemption, and nothing, not even our own shortcomings, can separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord. This understanding should produce not license for sin, but profound gratitude, humble worship, and courageous living, knowing that God will complete the good work He began in us.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, thank You for the incredible comfort and security of Your salvation. I praise You for Your faithfulness which holds me firm, even when I falter. Help me to live in the joy and freedom of this eternal truth, always trusting in Your unfailing love. In Jesus' name, amen.
