How do I respond to a friend who left the faith?

By Matthew (Tolu) Olowoyeye

Scripture

1 Peter 3:15

It's truly heartbreaking when a friend you care about walks away from their faith. Your concern for them is a testament to the love of Christ in your heart. The first, and most foundational, response is to bathe them in prayer. Pray for God to stir their heart, to reveal Himself anew, and to bring people into their lives who can speak truth and love. Remember that spiritual battles are won on our knees, and God alone can change a person's heart.

Secondly, continue to be a consistent and loving friend. Don't preach at them or condemn their choices, as this often pushes people further away. Instead, simply be present. Listen more than you speak, and when you do speak, let it be in love and grace. Show them the tangible love of Christ through your actions, your kindness, your patience, and your continued acceptance, even if you don't agree with their decisions. Let your life be a living letter that points to Jesus.

When opportunities arise, gently share your own faith journey and how Christ has impacted your life. Share your hope, joy, and peace without shaming them for their lack of it. Be prepared to answer questions or address doubts with humility and wisdom, always pointing back to the truth of Scripture. Remember that your testimony is powerful, and your consistent walk with God can be a beacon even when they are in darkness.

Finally, entrust them to God's sovereign care. It's a difficult thing to watch someone you love stray, but God's love for them is even greater than yours. He is relentless in His pursuit of His children, and His arm is not too short to save. Continue to hope, continue to pray, and continue to love, knowing that God is at work, even when we cannot see it. Rest in the assurance that He desires their return even more than you do.

Prayer

Lord, I pray for my friend who has left You. Please draw them back to Your loving embrace. Reveal Your truth and grace to them once more. In Jesus' name, amen.
