What does the Bible say about prosperity teaching?
By Matthew (Tolu) Olowoyeye
Scripture3 John 1:2
The Bible certainly speaks about God's desire to bless His people, but this is often misunderstood in the way "prosperity teaching" presents it. Scripture shows us that true prosperity isn't solely, or even primarily, about material wealth. Passages like , "Beloved, I pray that you may prosper in all things and be in health, just as your soul prospers," indicate a holistic view of well-being. God's blessings encompass spiritual growth, peace, good relationships, and a sound mind, alongside provision for our needs, which may or may not include vast riches.
Critically, the Bible warns against the love of money, stating in , "For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil." Prosperity teaching often, albeit subtly, encourages a focus on wealth as the primary sign of God's favor, which can lead believers astray. It can foster a transactional view of faith, where giving is seen as a means to manipulate God into giving more back, rather than an act of worship and generosity from a grateful heart. We are called to stewardship, not accumulation for personal gain.
Furthermore, the lives of many faithful biblical figures demonstrate that godliness does not always equate to material abundance. Think of prophets like Jeremiah, apostles like Paul, and even Jesus Himself, who often lived in humble circumstances. Their greatest prosperity was in their intimate relationship with God, their spiritual authority, and their eternal reward. Their examples challenge the notion that health and wealth are guaranteed outcomes of strong faith. God's ways are higher than our ways, and His blessings are often deeper than earthly treasures.
Ultimately, a balanced biblical view of prosperity understands that God provides for His children, sometimes supernaturally and abundantly, but always according to His perfect will and for His glory, not ours alone. Our focus should be on seeking first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, trusting that all other things will be added to us as He sees fit (). True riches are found in Christ, and walking in His paths leads to a blessed and fulfilled life, regardless of our financial standing.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, help me to understand true prosperity as You define it in Your Word. Guide my heart away from the love of money and towards a deeper love for You and Your kingdom. May my life reflect Your goodness and grace, in Jesus' name, amen.
