How do I recognise a false prophet?

By Matthew (Tolu) Olowoyeye

Scripture

Matthew 7:15-20

Recognizing a false prophet requires discernment rooted in God's Word. First, consider their message: does it align perfectly with the unchangeable truths of Scripture? False prophets often subtly twist or outright contradict biblical doctrine, downplaying sin, glorifying worldly success, or promoting works-based salvation. They might emphasize new revelations or personal experiences above the established truth of the Bible, which is our ultimate standard. Always test what is said against the whole counsel of God.

Secondly, examine their character and fruit. Jesus said, "You will know them by their fruits" (). Do they live lives that reflect humility, integrity, and love, or are they marked by arrogance, greed, immorality, or control? False prophets often seek personal gain, glory, or power, preying on people's vulnerabilities rather than sacrificially serving the flock. Their lifestyle and relationships should mirror the example of Christ, not contradict it.

Thirdly, evaluate their predictions and teachings. While not all true prophets perfectly predict every future event, false prophets' prophecies often fail to come true, or they make vague pronouncements that can be interpreted in multiple ways. Furthermore, consider their view of Jesus Christ: do they affirm His full deity and humanity, His atoning sacrifice, and His resurrection? Any diminishment of Christ's person or work is a grave indicator of doctrinal error.

Finally, cultivate a deep personal relationship with Jesus and a robust understanding of the Bible. The more familiar you are with the authentic voice of the Shepherd, the easier it will be to recognize the voice of a stranger. Pray for wisdom, study your Bible consistently, and seek counsel from mature, biblically sound leaders. God has given us His Spirit and His Word to protect us from deception, enabling us to stand firm in the truth.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, we pray for discernment to recognize truth from error. Guard our hearts and minds against deception, and help us to cling to Your unchanging Word. In Jesus' name, amen.
