How do I discern true and false teaching?

By Matthew (Tolu) Olowoyeye

Scripture

1 John 4:1

Discerning true from false teaching is a crucial skill for every believer, and it primarily begins with a deep immersion in God's Word. The Bible is our ultimate standard of truth, a lamp to our feet and a light to our path. When we consistently read, study, and meditate on Scripture, our spiritual senses become attuned to God's voice and His unchanging character. This establishes a firm foundation, making it easier to recognize anything that deviates from biblical truth. False teachings often subtly twist or misrepresent God's Word, making that familiarity essential.

Another key aspect of discernment is examining the fruit of the teaching and the teacher. Jesus Himself taught that "by their fruits you will know them." Does the teaching lead to a deeper love for God and others, humility, repentance, and obedience to Christ? Or does it promote pride, division, fear, or a focus on worldly gain? Similarly, observe the life and character of the teacher. Are they living in alignment with the Scriptures they proclaim? True teaching always points to Christ, glorifies God, and builds up the body of believers in love and truth.

We must also rely heavily on the Holy Spirit, who is given to us as our Helper and Guide into all truth. As we read God's Word and encounter various teachings, we should pause to pray, asking the Spirit for wisdom and discernment. He will illuminate what aligns with God's heart and expose what does not. This inner witness, coupled with a sound understanding of Scripture, creates a powerful defense against deception. The Spirit helps us not just understand the words, but also grasp their spiritual intent and implications.

Finally, exercising discernment involves community and counsel. While personal study and spiritual sensitivity are vital, we are not meant to navigate our faith in isolation. Engaging with mature, biblically grounded believers and trusted spiritual leaders provides an important safeguard. They can offer insights, challenge our perspectives, and help us see truths or errors we might have missed. Iron sharpens iron, and a healthy Christian community is a gift from God designed to help us grow in discernment and stand firm in sound doctrine.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, Grant me wisdom and discernment to rightly understand Your Word and to recognize truth from error. Guide me by Your Holy Spirit to hold fast to sound doctrine and to walk in the light of Your truth. In Jesus' name, amen.
