How do I put on the armour of God practically?
By Matthew (Tolu) Olowoyeye
ScriptureEphesians 6:10-18
Putting on the armor of God practically begins with understanding that it's not a magical incantation, but a spiritual disposition and an intentional lifestyle rooted in Christ. It's about consciously embracing the truths and resources God provides for spiritual warfare. Think of the "belt of truth" as truly living by God's Word, allowing its principles to guide your thoughts and decisions, and being honest with yourself and others. This foundational practice keeps you from deception and provides stability for everything else. It's an ongoing commitment to seek and obey truth.
The "breastplate of righteousness" means living a life that reflects God's moral character, not perfectly, but sincerely through faith in Christ. This includes confessing sins, seeking forgiveness, and striving to do what is right according to God's standards. It protects your heart and conscience from the enemy's accusations and shame. Practically, it means actively choosing integrity, purity, and justice in your daily interactions, knowing that your standing before God is secured by Christ's righteousness, which empowers your own pursuit of holiness.
Your "feet fitted with the readiness of the gospel of peace" means being prepared and willing to share the good news of Jesus Christ. This readiness stabilizes you in chaotic times and allows you to walk through life with purpose and calm, knowing you're an ambassador for reconciliation. Practically, it involves cultivating a heart that is alert to opportunities to speak of God's love, having a basic understanding of the Gospel message, and actively seeking to be a peacemaker in your sphere of influence, allowing God's peace to govern your steps.
Taking "the shield of faith" means actively trusting God's promises and character, especially when doubts or temptations arise. It's deliberately choosing to believe what God says over what your feelings or circumstances suggest. The "helmet of salvation" involves guarding your mind against the enemy's lies by reminding yourself of your secure identity and future in Christ. Finally, the "sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God," is your offensive weapon, speaking Scripture against lies, claiming promises, and using it as a guide for spiritual direction. These components are daily practices, not one-time events, deeply integrated into your walk with Christ.
Prayer
Dear Lord, help me to consciously put on Your full armor each day. Strengthen my faith, ground me in Your truth, and empower me to live righteously. May I be ready to share Your peace and wield Your Word effectively. In Jesus' name, amen.
