Are demons real, and can they influence a believer?
By Matthew (Tolu) Olowoyeye
ScriptureEphesians 6:10-18
Yes, demons are very real spiritual beings. The Bible repeatedly testifies to their existence, referring to them as fallen angels who rebelled against God under Satan's leadership. Jesus Himself frequently encountered and cast out demons during His earthly ministry, affirming their reality and power to oppress individuals. While we do not need to live in fear of them, understanding their existence helps us grasp the spiritual warfare described in Scripture and the invisible dimensions of our world.
Demons can certainly influence believers, but here's where we need biblical clarity and discernment. They cannot possess a born-again Christian, as the Holy Spirit indwells every true believer, making our bodies temples of God. The light of God's Spirit is far greater than any darkness. However, demons can tempt, harass, accuse, deceive, and exert external pressure, seeking to sowdiscord, doubt, and fear. They aim to steal our joy, disrupt our fellowship with God, and hinder our witness, often by exploiting our fleshly weaknesses.
The key to resisting demonic influence lies in our active faith in Christ. We are commanded to "submit to God, resist the devil, and he will flee from you" (). This involves living in obedience to God's Word, praying earnestly, putting on the full armor of God, truth, righteousness, peace, faith, salvation, and the Word of God, and walking in the Spirit. Our authority over demonic forces comes from our union with Christ, not from our own strength. We stand firm in His victory.
So, while demons are real and active in the world, believers are not helpless victims. We are equipped with divine power through Christ to overcome their schemes. Our focus should always be on God's sovereignty and His protective love, rather than fixating on the enemy. By drawing near to God, diligently studying His Word, and living in Christian community, we maintain a strong defense and experience the freedom and peace that are ours in Christ Jesus.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, thank You for Your protection and for the power of Your Holy Spirit within me. Help me to stand firm in my faith, resisting all the enemy's schemes and walking in the victory You have secured for me. In Jesus' name, amen.
