John's vision of the end reaches the goal toward which the whole story has been moving: Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men, and He will dwell with them… God Himself will be with them and be their God. The deepest meaning of Christmas, God with us, finds here its eternal and unending fulfilment. At Bethlehem, God came to dwell with us for a time, in a single body, in one place. At the end, God will dwell with His people forever, every barrier removed, every separation healed, in a world made new where God Himself is fully present with them.
This is where Advent finally points. The "God with us" that began at the manger does not end at the empty tomb or even at the second coming; it opens out into an eternity in which God dwells with His people without end. The longing that runs through all of human history, to be with God, to have every tear wiped away, to be fully home, is answered here, in the promise that God Himself will be with us and be our God. The Incarnation was the down payment; this is the inheritance in full.
Let the homesickness you feel, for God, for healing, for home, find its hope here. The God who came to dwell with us at Bethlehem will dwell with us forever. That is where the whole story is going, and where you are going in Him.
Take Into The Day
Let the deep longings of your heart, for God's nearness, for healing, for home, be lifted today toward their certain fulfilment: a day when God Himself will dwell with His people forever. Live today in hope of that home, and let it comfort whatever in you aches to be there.
Prayer
Lord, the goal of all things is that God Himself will dwell with His people, every tear wiped away, every separation healed. The "God with us" of Bethlehem will be ours forever. Let this hope answer my deepest homesickness, and carry me forward toward the day I am fully home with You. Amen.
