Paul reaches back to the first creation, "God who commanded light to shine out of darkness", and tells us that the same God has performed a second creation: He "has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ." The light that the Incarnation brought into the world is meant to shine also within us, in our hearts, so that we come to know the glory of God by looking at the face of Christ. The Light that came at Bethlehem now rises inside those who believe.

And notice where the glory of God is found: "in the face of Jesus Christ." If you want to see what God is truly like, you do not peer into the blinding mystery of the divine; you look at the face of Jesus. The glory of God, His character, His heart, His very nature, is made knowable in a human face, the face of the One born at Bethlehem. The Christmas Light was given not only to be admired in a manger scene but to shine into our hearts, illuminating the knowledge of God in the face of His Son. The light that dawned over Bethlehem is meant to dawn in us.

Look at the face of Christ today to know the glory of God. And ask that the same light which came into the world would shine afresh within your own heart.

Take Into The Day

Today, seek the knowledge of God where Paul locates it: in the face of Jesus Christ. Spend time beholding Christ, His character, His words, His heart, and ask God to let the light of His glory shine afresh within your own heart.

Prayer

Father, You who made light shine out of darkness have shone in my heart, giving me the knowledge of Your glory in the face of Jesus Christ. Let that light shine afresh in me today. As I behold the face of Your Son, reveal to me the glory of who You are. Amen.
