Matthew 2:10-11

…they rejoiced with exceedingly great joy… and fell down and worshipped Him. And when they had opened their treasures, they presented gifts to Him: gold, frankincense, and myrrh.
, Matthew 2:10-11

The wise men, having followed the star across great distances, at last reach the Child, and their response shows us what beholding Christ should produce. First, joy: they rejoiced with exceedingly great joy, an overflowing gladness at finally finding the King they had sought. Then, worship: they fell down and worshipped Him, these dignified men from the East prostrated themselves before a young child, recognising in Him a King worthy of adoration. And then, giving: they presented gifts to Him, gold, frankincense, and myrrh, opening their treasures and offering their best.

The order is instructive. Worship comes before giving, and giving flows out of worship. The gifts were not a payment or a transaction; they were the natural overflow of hearts that had bowed. And the gifts themselves were fit for who He was, gold for a King, frankincense for one to be worshipped, myrrh foreshadowing the death He came to die. The wise men teach us the true shape of our response to Christ: joy at finding Him, worship that bows before Him, and the glad offering of our treasures to Him. In a season full of giving gifts to one another, they remind us of the One to whom the first and best gift is owed.

Bring the wise men's response to Christ today: joy, worship, and a gift. Open your treasures before Him, your time, your resources, your very self, and offer your best to the King.

Take Into The Day

Take the wise men's path today: let beholding Christ move you to joy, then to worship, then to giving. Open one of your "treasures" to Him, your time, your money, your gifts, your self, and offer your best to the King, as they did.

Prayer

Lord Jesus, the wise men rejoiced, fell down and worshipped, and opened their treasures to You. Give me their response: joy at finding You, worship that bows before You, and a glad offering of my best. You are the King; receive the treasures of my life today. Amen.
