Alongside Simeon in the temple stood Anna, an elderly widow and prophetess who had given her long life to worship, fasting, and prayer. And when she saw the child, her response was twofold and immediate: she gave thanks to the Lord, and spoke of Him to all those who looked for redemption. Having beheld the Christ, she could not keep silent, gratitude rose up in worship, and then overflowed in witness. She thanked God for what she had seen, and then told everyone who was waiting for redemption that the wait was over.

Anna shows us the natural two-fold response to having met Christ, and it is the perfect note for the day after Christmas. First, thanksgiving, for the indescribable gift now given. And second, testimony, speaking of Him to others. The good news of Christmas was never meant to be received and hoarded; it overflows. Anna had spent decades waiting; now, having seen the answer, she became its herald, telling all who longed for redemption that He had come. Worship that truly grasps the gift cannot help but become witness; gratitude for Christ naturally turns into speaking of Christ.

Having celebrated His coming, follow Anna today: give thanks, and then speak of Him. Let your gratitude for Christmas overflow into a word about Christ to someone who is still waiting for hope.

Lord, like Anna, having seen Your Christ, let me both give thanks and speak of Him. Fill me with gratitude for the gift of Your Son, and let that gratitude overflow into witness. Give me a word about Jesus today for someone still longing for redemption. Amen.
