Paul makes one of the most breathtaking statements in all of Scripture about the Child of Bethlehem grown to a man: in Him dwells all the fullness of the Godhead bodily. Not a portion of God, not a spark of the divine, not a godlike quality, all the fullness of the Godhead, the complete and undiminished deity of God, dwelling bodily in Jesus Christ. In the man Jesus, the whole of God was present in a human body. To meet Him was to meet God in full; nothing of God was lacking in Him.

This guards the wonder of Christmas from being shrunk. It is tempting to think of the Incarnation as God somehow reduced, a diminished or partial deity squeezed into human form. But Paul says the fullness of the Godhead dwelt in Him, bodily, completely, without subtraction. The infant in the manger held within His small frame the fullness of God. And the wonderful implication for us follows in the same passage: "and you are complete in Him." Because all the fullness of God is in Christ, the one who has Christ has access to all of God; there is nothing more of God to be sought elsewhere. He is enough, because He is full.

Worship the fullness of God dwelling in Christ today. And rest in this: having Him, you have all of God you will ever need. He is full, and in Him you are complete.

Take Into The Day

Today, treasure that in Christ dwells all the fullness of God, and therefore in Him you lack nothing of God. When you are tempted to seek God's fullness in some experience or thing beyond Christ, return to Him: He is full, and in Him you are complete.

Prayer

Lord Jesus, in You dwells all the fullness of the Godhead bodily. I worship You, in whom the whole of God came near in a human body. Thank You that, having You, I have all of God I will ever need. You are full, and in You I am complete. Amen.
