Paul calls it a mystery great beyond controversy, and then states it in words that have echoed through the church ever since: God was manifested in the flesh. Here is the heart of Christmas in five syllables. The invisible God became visible; the eternal Word took a body; the One no eye could see was "manifested in the flesh," wrapped in skin and laid in a manger. This is the central marvel of the Incarnation, not that a great man was born, nor that God sent a message, but that God Himself was manifested in human flesh. The baby of Bethlehem was God with us, God made visible.

We should be careful not to let familiarity dull this wonder. That God should become man is the most staggering claim in all of religion, and the church has guarded it carefully: truly God and truly man, not God in disguise nor a man merely inspired, but the eternal Son taking our full humanity to Himself. Paul traces the whole arc, manifested in flesh, vindicated by the Spirit, seen by angels, preached to the nations, believed in the world, received up in glory, but it all begins at the manger, with God manifested in the flesh. This is the mystery we adore at Christmas.

Let the wonder of the Incarnation strike you afresh today. The God you worship was manifested in the flesh for you. Adore the mystery, and do not let it grow ordinary.

Take Into The Day

Resist letting the Incarnation become ordinary today. Pause and let the wonder land: the eternal God was manifested in human flesh, for you. Spend a few moments simply adoring the mystery, God with us, rather than rushing past it.

Prayer

Lord, great is the mystery of godliness: God was manifested in the flesh. I worship You, eternal Son, who took our humanity and were laid in a manger for us. Forgive me when this wonder grows ordinary. Strike me afresh with the marvel of God made flesh, and let me adore. Amen.
