John records the great sorrow at the heart of the Christmas story: He came to His own, and His own did not receive Him. The Creator came into His own creation, the King to His own people, and was largely turned away. There was no room at the inn; there was little room in the hearts. The world He had made did not recognise its Maker; the people long prepared for Him did not welcome their Messiah. The most wonderful arrival in history was met, by most, with indifference or rejection.

This is a sobering note to sound so near to Christmas, but a necessary one, because the same choice still stands before every heart. Christ comes, but coming is not the same as being received. He can come close, fill a season with reminders of Himself, knock at the door of a life, and still be left outside if He is not welcomed in. The tragedy of that first Christmas can be quietly repeated in any of us who let the season pass with Christ near but never received. The question Advent finally presses is not whether He has come, He has, but whether we will receive Him.

He has come to you this Advent, through His Word, through this very season. Do not be among those who let Him come and go unreceived. Open the door, and welcome the King in.

Take Into The Day

Make sure you are not merely near Christ this season but receiving Him. Today, deliberately welcome Him in, open some closed room of your life to Him, say your yes to Him afresh, rather than letting Him come close and pass by unreceived.

Prayer

Lord Jesus, You came to Your own, and Your own did not receive You. Do not let me be among them. You have come close to me this Advent; I open the door and welcome You in. Be received in me, not merely near me, but truly received as my King. Amen.
