Not to Condemn, but to Save

Many people carry, somewhere deep inside, the suspicion that God is mainly against them, watching to catch them out, eager to condemn. John corrects this directly: God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved. The purpose of the coming was not condemnation but salvation. God already had every right to condemn a rebellious world; He did not need to send His Son to accomplish that. He sent His Son for the opposite reason, to rescue, to save, to bring home the very ones who deserved condemnation.

This is crucial for how we come to Christ this Advent. If we imagine the Child of Bethlehem as a stern judge come to expose our failures, we will keep our distance. But Scripture says He came not to condemn but to save. The manger is not a courtroom; it is a rescue. Yes, there is judgment in the world and judgment to come, but the mission of Christmas, the reason the Son was sent, was salvation. He came reaching toward us in mercy, not bearing down on us in wrath. The door He opens is the door of salvation, and it stands open even to the guilty.
