John tells us where to look if we want to see the love of God: In this the love of God was manifested toward us, that God has sent His only begotten Son into the world. Love, John says, is not finally proved by words or feelings but by what it gives and does, and God's love was demonstrated in the most costly gift imaginable: He sent His only Son. The measure of the Father's love is the worth of the Son He gave. To grasp how much God loves us, we look at the manger and the cross it leads to, and we see what His love was willing to give.

And the purpose is stated with beautiful simplicity: "that we might live through Him." The Son was sent not to condemn the loveless world but to bring it life, to give to the dying the very life of God. This is the deepest meaning of Christmas: not merely that a remarkable child was born, but that the love of God was made visible, sending the Son into the world so that we, who were perishing, might live. Every Christmas light, every gift exchanged, is a faint echo of the one great Gift that revealed the love of God.

When you doubt whether God loves you, look where John points: God sent His only Son so that you might live. There is the proof of His love. Let it settle your heart this Advent.

Take Into The Day

When you doubt God's love today, don't look inward at your feelings; look to the manger and the cross. God sent His only Son so that you might live, there is the proof. Let the costliness of that gift convince you of how deeply you are loved.

Prayer

Father, You showed Your love by sending Your only Son into the world, that I might live through Him. When I doubt that You love me, fix my eyes on that gift. The worth of Your Son is the measure of Your love for me. Thank You for so great a love. Amen.
