Blessed is the Lord God of Israel, for He has visited and redeemed His people, and has raised up a horn of salvation for us in the house of His servant David.

On this third Sunday of Advent, we hear Zechariah's burst of praise at the dawning of redemption: Blessed is the Lord God of Israel, for He has visited and redeemed His people. After centuries of waiting, the old priest sees the rescue beginning, and his first word is blessed, praise erupting at the realisation that God has not forgotten His people but has "visited and redeemed" them. The word "visited" is full of tenderness: God did not save His people from a distance, issuing a decree from heaven, but came near, drew close, visited them in Person.

He has "raised up a horn of salvation", the horn being a symbol of strength and power. The salvation God brings in Christ is no frail or partial rescue; it is a mighty deliverance, a horn of saving power raised up in David's line. And it is salvation God initiated, He visited, He redeemed, He raised up. We did not summon our Saviour; God, of His own mercy, sent Him. The whole Christmas story is the story of God taking the initiative to come and save a people who could not save themselves.

Join Zechariah's praise today. God has visited and redeemed His people; a mighty Saviour has been raised up for you. Bless the Lord for the salvation that came to find you.

Let praise be your response today, as it was Zechariah's. Spend time blessing God specifically for visiting and redeeming you, for taking the initiative to come and save you when you could not save yourself. Let gratitude for so great a salvation fill your Advent.

Prayer

Blessed are You, Lord God, for You have visited and redeemed Your people and raised up a mighty horn of salvation for us. You came near; You took the initiative to save me. I bless You today for so great a salvation, freely given to one who could never earn it. Amen.
