At the birth of John the Baptist, his father Zechariah prophesied over the newborn the role he would play: you will go before the face of the Lord to prepare His ways. Before the King arrives, a way must be prepared; before Christ could come to hearts, a forerunner would call people to get ready, to repent, to level the road, to remove the obstacles that would keep the King out. John's whole life was about preparation: not the main event, but the one who readies people for it.

There is a lesson here for Advent, and for us. The coming of Christ into a life, or more deeply into a heart already His, is not automatic or passive; a way must be prepared. The valleys of discouragement, the mountains of pride, the crooked places of sin and the rough places of resentment all need attention if the King is to have clear passage. We cannot save ourselves, but we can prepare the way, clearing what would obstruct Him, making the road straight, getting our hearts ready to receive Him more fully. Advent is preparation season, and the work is ours to do.

What needs clearing from the road of your heart this Advent, so the King may have free passage? Do the work of preparation today, repent, level, straighten, and make ready the way of the Lord.

Take Into The Day

Take up John's work today: prepare the way for the King in your own heart. Name one obstacle, a pride, a resentment, an unrepented sin, a discouragement, and begin clearing it, so that Christ may have freer passage in you this Advent.

Prayer

Lord, John went before You to prepare Your way. Help me prepare the way for You in my own heart this Advent. Show me what obstructs Your passage, pride, sin, resentment, despair, and give me grace to clear it, that You may come freely to me. Amen.
