And He shall stand and feed His flock in the strength of the LORD… and they shall abide, for now He shall be great to the ends of the earth.

Micah, having foretold the little town where the Ruler would be born, describes the kind of King He would be: He shall stand and feed His flock in the strength of the Lord. This King is also a Shepherd. The greatest ruler the world would ever know would govern not as a distant emperor counting subjects, but as a shepherd tending sheep, standing watch over His flock, feeding them, leading them, caring for each one. Power and tenderness meet in this King; His greatness expresses itself in gentle, attentive care.

And there is rest in the promise that follows: "they shall abide", His flock shall dwell securely, settled and safe under His shepherding. Sheep under a faithful shepherd do not need to be anxious; they can lie down, feed, and rest, because the shepherd is watching. So it is for those who belong to this King-Shepherd. We "shall abide", not because our circumstances are easy, but because our Shepherd is strong and faithful, great to the ends of the earth yet near enough to feed each lamb by name.

You are not governed by a distant ruler but shepherded by a caring King. Let Him feed and lead you today, and abide, rest secure under the watch of the Shepherd who is great to the ends of the earth.

Take Into The Day

Live today as one of the flock of a caring King-Shepherd. Let Him feed you through His Word, lead you in your decisions, and watch over you, and in His care, "abide": rest secure rather than anxious, trusting the Shepherd who is great to the ends of the earth.

Prayer

Lord, You are the King who shepherds His flock, feeding us in the strength of the Lord. Thank You that Your greatness comes near as tender care. Feed me, lead me, and watch over me today; and under Your faithful keeping, let me abide and rest secure. Amen.
