And in that day there shall be a Root of Jesse, who shall stand as a banner to the people; for the Gentiles shall seek Him, and His resting place shall be glorious.

Isaiah calls the coming Messiah the Root of Jesse, springing from the family line of David's father, and says He "shall stand as a banner to the people." In the ancient world, a banner was raised on a hilltop as a rallying point, a standard that scattered people could see from afar and gather around. So the Messiah would be lifted up as a banner for the world, a rallying point around which the lost and scattered could assemble. And remarkably, Isaiah says, "the Gentiles shall seek Him", not just Israel, but the nations, the outsiders, would come.

This is one of the great surprises woven through the Christmas story: the coming King was for the whole world. Centuries before wise men from the East followed a star to Bethlehem, Isaiah foresaw the Gentiles seeking the Root of Jesse. The salvation born in a Jewish manger was never meant to stay within one nation; from the start it was a banner raised for all peoples, a light for the Gentiles, a rallying point for every scattered and seeking soul on earth, including yours and mine.

Whoever you are, wherever you come from, the banner is raised for you. The Root of Jesse stands as a rallying point for the nations. Gather to Him today, and seek Him.

Take Into The Day

Remember today that Christ is a banner raised for all peoples, including you and those far from you. Seek Him yourself as your rallying point, and let the breadth of His welcome move you to point someone outside the fold toward Him too.

Prayer

Lord, You are the Root of Jesse, raised as a banner for all the nations, and the Gentiles seek You. Thank You that the salvation of Bethlehem was for the whole world, and for me. I gather to You as my rallying point, and I pray others far off would seek You too. Amen.
