Isaiah looks beyond the manger to the everlasting reign of the Child who would be born: Of the increase of His government and peace there will be no end. The kingdoms of this world rise and fall; every empire, however mighty, eventually crumbles, and every earthly ruler's power ends at the grave. But the government of this King has no end, it only increases, spreading wider and growing deeper through the ages, and its peace expands without limit. The baby in Bethlehem is a King whose reign outlasts time itself.
And notice how Isaiah grounds this certainty: "The zeal of the Lord of hosts will perform this." This eternal kingdom does not depend on human effort to establish or sustain it; it is guaranteed by the passionate commitment of Almighty God Himself, who is zealous to bring it to pass. However the kingdoms of earth may rage and the powers of the moment may seem to triumph, God's zeal stands behind the increasing government of His King, and it cannot fail. The peace He brings will have the last word.
When the powers of this world trouble you today, lift your eyes to the King whose government has no end. His reign and His peace are increasing still, and the zeal of the Lord guarantees it.
Take Into The Day
When the turmoil and powers of this world unsettle you today, lift your eyes to the King whose government and peace have no end. Anchor your hope not in the kingdoms that rise and fall, but in His reign, which only increases, guaranteed by God's own zeal.
Prayer
Lord, of the increase of Your government and peace there will be no end, and the zeal of the Lord of hosts will perform it. When the powers of this world trouble me, anchor my hope in Your unending reign. Reign in me, and let Your peace increase. Amen.
