On this second Sunday of Advent, Zechariah summons us to rejoice at the coming of a King, but a King unlike any the world expects. Behold, your King is coming to you; He is just and having salvation, lowly and riding on a donkey. The world's kings come in pomp and power, on warhorses, demanding tribute and inspiring fear. This King comes "lowly," riding not a warhorse but a humble donkey, bringing not conquest but salvation. The greatness of this King is displayed in His lowliness; His majesty wears the clothing of humility.
This sets the whole tone of the Incarnation. The King of glory would come not to a palace but to a stable, not in splendour but in poverty, not to be served but to serve and to save. And this is precisely why we may "rejoice greatly", because such a King is approachable. A King on a warhorse we would flee from in terror; a King on a donkey, lowly and bringing salvation, we may run toward with joy. His humility is our welcome; His lowliness is the open door through which the humblest may come.
Rejoice today that your King comes lowly. He is not too high to be reached, not too proud to be approached. Run toward the King who comes humbly, bringing salvation.
Take Into The Day
Rejoice today that your King comes lowly and approachable, not on a warhorse but a donkey. Come to Him freely with whatever you carry, His humility is your welcome. And learn from Him: let His lowliness shape some choice of yours today.
Prayer
Lord, on this Advent Sunday I rejoice that my King comes to me, just, bringing salvation, and lowly, riding on a donkey. You are not too high to be reached. Thank You that Your humility is my welcome. I run to You with joy, and I learn lowliness from You. Amen.
