Malachi's was the last prophetic voice before four centuries of silence, and his final word was a promise of coming. Behold, I send My messenger, and he will prepare the way before Me. First would come a forerunner to prepare the road; then "the Lord, whom you seek, will suddenly come to His temple." After the long wait, the arrival would be sudden, the One they had sought for generations appearing at last, the Messenger of the covenant Himself stepping into His house.

There is both comfort and challenge here. The comfort: God does not forget His promises, even across centuries of apparent silence. The four hundred years between Malachi and the angel's visit to Zechariah were not God's forgetting but His preparing; the silence was pregnant. And the challenge: He comes "suddenly," and the question Malachi presses is whether we will be ready, for "who can endure the day of His coming?" The coming of the Lord is good news, but it is not trivial news; it calls for hearts prepared. Advent is the season of preparation, of getting the road ready for the King.

If God seems silent in some long wait of yours, take heart from Malachi: the silence is not forgetting. And prepare the way, get your heart ready, for the Lord you seek will come.

Where God has seemed silent in a long wait, take heart today that His silence is not forgetting but preparing. And do the Advent work of preparation: clear something from the road of your heart today to make it ready for the King.

Prayer

Lord, after long silence You kept Your promise to come. Where You seem silent in my waiting now, help me trust that You are preparing, not forgetting. And prepare my heart for You, clear the road, make me ready, for You will come. Amen.
