Jeremiah 23:5-6
…I will raise to David a Branch of righteousness; a King shall reign and prosper… Now this is His name by which He will be called: THE LORD OUR RIGHTEOUSNESS.

Into a time of failed and faithless kings, Jeremiah speaks a promise of a coming King unlike all the rest: a Branch of righteousness… a King shall reign and prosper, and execute judgment and righteousness in the earth. Israel's kings had largely disappointed, unjust, weak, corrupt. But God promised to raise up from David's line a King who would be everything they were not: righteous, just, and reigning in true wisdom. The "Branch" is a tender image, new life sprouting from what looked like a cut-down, dead stump, the royal line that seemed finished bursting into fresh growth.
But the wonder is in the name He bears: THE LORD OUR RIGHTEOUSNESS. This King would not merely rule righteously; He would be our righteousness, providing the very righteousness we lack and could never produce. Here, centuries before Bethlehem, is the gospel in a royal name: the coming King would clothe His people in His own righteousness, becoming for us what we could never be for ourselves. He reigns not only over us but for us, and His righteousness becomes ours.
Receive your King today by His own name. He is THE LORD OUR RIGHTEOUSNESS, not only your ruler, but your righteousness. Rest in the righteousness He has become for you.
Take Into The Day
When you feel the weight of your own unrighteousness today, take refuge in your King's name: THE LORD OUR RIGHTEOUSNESS. Rest not in your record but in the righteousness He has become for you, and let that settle your standing before God.
Prayer
Lord, You are the righteous Branch raised up from David's line, the King who reigns in justice. And You are THE LORD OUR RIGHTEOUSNESS, not only my ruler but my righteousness. Thank You that You became for me what I could never be. I rest in You. Amen.
