Advent opens in darkness, and with a command to rise out of it. Arise, shine; for your light has come! Isaiah spoke these words to a people in the shadows, and they ring across the centuries to a world still waiting for dawn. The command is not "manufacture your own light" but "arise and shine, for your light has come", the shining is a response to a light that arrives from outside us, the glory of the Lord risen like a sunrise over a dark land. We do not generate the light; we wake up to it.

This is the heartbeat of Advent. Into a world darkened by sin, sorrow, and the long shadow of death, God sends light, not a teaching, not a programme, but a Person, the true Light coming into the world. And the right response is to arise: to lift our heads, to turn our faces toward the dawn, to let His light fall on us. However dark the season feels, and for some this December the darkness is very real, the announcement of Advent stands: your light has come.

Begin this Advent by turning toward the light. Wherever you sit in shadow today, lift your face to the One whose glory has risen, and let His light fall on you.

Take Into The Day

Begin Advent today by deliberately turning toward Christ, the Light that has come. Wherever you feel in shadow, grief, weariness, fear, lift your face to Him in prayer, and ask His light to rise over that very place.

Prayer

Lord, as Advent begins, I arise and turn toward You, for my Light has come. Into whatever darkness I carry, let Your glory rise like the dawn. I cannot make my own light; I can only wake to Yours. Shine on me this Advent, and let me reflect Your light. Amen.
