As this month of gratitude closes, the psalmist asks the question that a truly thankful heart must finally ask: What shall I render to the Lord for all His benefits toward me? When we have counted God's blessings, remembered His works, learned contentment, and given thanks again and again, gratitude moves us beyond words to response: what can I give back to a God who has given me so much? The grateful heart does not want only to feel thankful; it longs to do something, to render something back to the Giver.

The psalmist's own answer, in the verses that follow, is instructive. He does not try to repay God, that is impossible; the benefits are too vast and too freely given. Instead, he resolves to "take up the cup of salvation, and call upon the name of the Lord," to offer the sacrifice of thanksgiving, and to keep his promises to God. In other words, the way we "render" to God for His benefits is not by repaying Him but by receiving His salvation more fully, calling on Him, thanking Him, and living wholly for Him. Gratitude completes itself in a life given back to God.

Ask the psalmist's question for yourself today: what shall I render to the Lord for all His benefits? And let the answer be a life of receiving, thanking, and living for Him. Tomorrow, December begins, and the greatest of all His benefits comes into full view: the gift of His Son, the coming King.

Take Into The Day

Ask yourself today: "What shall I render to the Lord for all His benefits toward me?" Then offer one concrete response of gratitude, a renewed commitment, an act of worship, a life-direction given back to Him. Let your thanks become a life rendered to God.

Prayer

Lord, what shall I render to You for all Your benefits toward me? I cannot repay You; Your gifts are too many and too free. So I give You myself, receiving Your salvation, calling on Your name, living for You. Receive my life as my thanksgiving. Amen.
