Paul presses gratitude to its furthest reach: giving thanks always for all things to God the Father. "Always", at every time, in every season. "For all things", leaving nothing out. This is the high-water mark of a grateful life, a thanksgiving so deep and so trusting that it can give thanks to God in and through all the things that come, even the hard ones, because it trusts the Father's good purpose running beneath them all. It does not mean calling evil good, but it means trusting the Father so completely that we can thank Him even in the dark, confident that He is working all things for our good.

Notice that this thanksgiving is offered "in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ." It is through Him that we can give thanks always and for all things, for it is in Christ that we know the Father is good, that nothing can separate us from His love, and that He is weaving even our griefs into glory. Apart from Christ, "thanks for all things" would be impossible, even cruel; but in Christ, who turned the worst thing, a cross, into the best thing, our salvation, we can trust that the Father is able to bring good out of anything, and so give thanks, always, for all things.

Stretch your gratitude today toward Paul's "always" and "all things." In the name of Jesus, and trusting the Father's purpose, give thanks even where you cannot yet see the good.

Stretch your gratitude today: try giving thanks to the Father even for something hard you face, not because it is good in itself, but because you trust His good purpose in it, through Christ. Practise thanking Him where you cannot yet see the good.

Prayer

Father, teach me to give thanks always and for all things, in the name of my Lord Jesus Christ. Where I cannot see the good, help me trust Your purpose so deeply that I can thank You even there. Through Christ, who brings good from anything, make me always thankful. Amen.
