I Will Remember His Works

The psalmist Asaph was in deep distress, so troubled he could not sleep, wondering whether God had forgotten to be gracious. And he found his way back to hope by a deliberate act: I will remember the works of the Lord; surely I will remember Your wonders of old. Notice the resolve in it, "I will remember… I will meditate… I will talk of Your deeds." When his feelings had run dry and despair was near, Asaph did not wait for gratitude to return on its own; he chose to remember, on purpose, what God had done.

This is one of the most practical pathways back to a grateful heart. When we are discouraged, our memory narrows to the present pain and forgets the long history of God's faithfulness. The cure is the discipline Asaph practised: to deliberately call to mind God's past works, His deliverances, His answered prayers, His proven faithfulness in our own lives and throughout Scripture, and to dwell on them, meditate on them, even talk about them. Remembering what God has done rekindles trust and thanks for what He is doing and will do. Gratitude grows in the soil of remembered grace.

When discouragement narrows your vision today, widen it by remembering. Call to mind God's works, dwell on them, speak of them, and let remembered grace rekindle your thanks.
