Jesus issues a warning we rarely take as seriously as He meant it: Take heed and beware of covetousness. Covetousness, the craving for more, the restless desire for what we do not have, is the great enemy of gratitude and contentment, and Jesus tells us to be on guard against it as we would against a thief or a disease. "Take heed and beware" is the language of vigilance; covetousness is subtle, creeping, and we are all susceptible, so we must watch for it.

And Jesus exposes the lie at its heart: "one's life does not consist in the abundance of the things he possesses." Covetousness whispers the opposite, that a fuller life is just a few more possessions away, that we will finally be content when we have acquired the next thing. But it is a lie. Life, real life, the life that satisfies, is not made of stuff, and no amount of accumulation will ever produce it. The richest hoarder is not more alive than the contented poor man; often he is less so. Jesus calls us to see through the lie, lest we spend our years chasing an abundance that can never deliver what it promises.

Watch your own heart for covetousness today. When the craving for "more" stirs, name it for the lie it tells: your life does not consist in what you possess.

Stay alert today to the subtle pull of covetousness, the craving for more that masquerades as a fuller life. When it stirs, name the lie: "my life does not consist in what I possess," and turn the craving into thanks for what you have.

Prayer

Lord, help me take heed and beware of covetousness, the quiet enemy of my gratitude. Expose the lie that more possessions mean more life. Guard my heart from restless craving, and teach me that my life consists not in what I own but in You. Amen.
