Godliness with Contentment

Paul drops a quiet revolution into a single sentence: godliness with contentment is great gain. The world measures gain by accumulation, more money, more possessions, more status; the more you acquire, the greater your gain. Paul overturns this entirely. The truly rich person, he says, is not the one who has the most, but the one who has godliness and is content with what God has given. That combination, a life pursuing God, joined to a heart at peace with its portion, is "great gain," a wealth the richest discontented person never knows.

Notice that contentment is paired with godliness, not with circumstances. Paul is not describing the contentment of someone who finally got everything they wanted; he is describing a contentment that comes from godliness itself, from having God, and finding Him enough. The discontented heart is always poor, however much it owns, because it is always reaching for more; the content heart is rich, however little it owns, because it has learned that with God it lacks nothing essential. Discontent is a leak that drains away the joy of every blessing; contentment is the vessel that holds and treasures what God gives.

True gain is not getting more but being content with God and what He has given. Pursue that wealth today, and you will be rich indeed.
