Paul gives us a specific and profound reason for thanksgiving: God "has qualified us to be partakers of the inheritance of the saints in the light." Consider that word "qualified." We were not qualified, by our own merit, we had no right to any share in God's holy inheritance; we were, as the next verses say, in "the power of darkness." But God Himself qualified us, making us fit for an inheritance we could never have earned, and transferring us into the kingdom of His Son. The qualification is entirely His doing, and so the thanksgiving is entirely due to Him.

This is gratitude not for a passing blessing but for our whole eternal standing. We give thanks not because we managed to make ourselves acceptable, but because God did what we could not, qualifying the unqualified, fitting us for "the inheritance of the saints in the light." When we remember that our place in God's family and our share in His eternal inheritance are pure gift, the only fitting response is overflowing thanks. We did not earn our way in; we were qualified by grace, and gratitude is the language of grace received.

Give thanks today not only for today's blessings but for your eternal qualification. You who were unqualified have been made a partaker of the inheritance of light, and that is cause for the deepest gratitude.

Thank God today not just for daily blessings but for the biggest gift of standing: that He has qualified you, who could never qualify yourself, for an eternal inheritance. Let the wonder of being made fit by grace fuel deep gratitude.

Prayer

Father, thank You that You have qualified me, who could never qualify myself, to share in the inheritance of the saints in light. You did what I could not. I was unfit, and grace made me a partaker. Receive my deepest thanks for so great a gift. Amen.
