In the middle of a chapter about generous giving, Paul suddenly bursts out with this exclamation: Thanks be to God for His indescribable gift! He has been speaking of the believers' generosity to one another, and the thought of God's grace overflows into praise for the greatest gift of all, the gift so vast that no words can capture it. That gift is Christ Himself: God's own Son, given for us. Paul, the man of many words, here confesses that words fail; the gift is indescribable.

This puts all our other gratitude in perspective. We rightly give thanks for countless blessings, health, provision, relationships, daily mercies. But behind and above them all stands the one gift that words cannot describe: Jesus Christ, given to us by the Father. Every other gift is precious; this one is beyond price and beyond description. And it is the gift that secures all the rest, for "He who did not spare His own Son… how shall He not with Him also freely give us all things?" The deepest gratitude of the believer is reserved for this: that God gave His Son.

As November moves toward December, let your gratitude rise to its true height. Above all the gifts you can name, give thanks for the one you cannot fully describe, God's indescribable gift, Jesus Christ.

Take Into The Day

Amid all the things you thank God for today, lift your gratitude to its highest object: the indescribable gift of Jesus Christ. Spend a moment thanking God specifically for His Son, the gift that words cannot capture and that secures every other.

Prayer

Father, thanks be to You for Your indescribable gift, Your own Son, Jesus, given for me. Words fail before such a gift. Above every other blessing, I thank You for Christ. Let my deepest gratitude always return to Him. Amen.
