The psalmist issues an invitation full of energy: Let us come before His presence with thanksgiving; let us shout joyfully to Him. There is nothing dull or grudging here. To come before God with thanksgiving, in the psalmist's vision, is to come gladly, even exuberantly, shouting joyfully, singing psalms, approaching God not as a chore but as a delight. Gratitude, fully felt, naturally overflows into joy and even celebration.

We sometimes imagine reverence and joyful thanksgiving as opposites, as though coming before God seriously means coming before Him soberly and quietly. But Scripture holds them together. We come before the presence of the great God, and we come with thanksgiving and joyful shouts. Reverence does not silence gratitude; it fuels it, for the more we grasp who God is, the more there is to be thankful for, and the more our thanks wants to become praise. The grateful heart is, in the end, a joyful heart, glad to be in the presence of so good a God.

Do not come to God reluctantly today, as to a duty. Come with thanksgiving, even joy, glad to draw near to the God who has been so good to you.

Take Into The Day

Bring some joy into your thanksgiving today. Rather than thanking God quietly and dutifully, let your gratitude become glad, sing, or pray your thanks aloud with energy. Come before Him not as to a chore but as to a delight.

Prayer

Lord, I come before Your presence with thanksgiving, and I want to come with joy. Lift my gratitude from dull duty to glad praise. The more I see of Your goodness, the more I have to thank You for. Let me draw near to You today gladly. Amen.
