This is the verse at the very heart of all we have been doing these six months, "rooted and built up in Him", and notice how Paul says it overflows: abounding in it with thanksgiving. The life that is truly rooted in Christ does not produce a grim, dutiful religion; it produces an overflow of gratitude. Thanksgiving is the natural fragrance of a well-rooted soul. The deeper the roots go into Christ, the more the life abounds with thanks.

The word "abounding" suggests more than a polite, occasional thankfulness; it is gratitude in overflow, in abundance, spilling over the edges. This is the goal of being rooted: not merely to stand firm, but to overflow with thanks. And the order matters. We do not manufacture gratitude by sheer effort; it grows, abundantly, from being rooted and built up in Christ. As we sink our roots into who He is and all He has done, thanksgiving rises naturally, the way sap rises in a healthy tree.

If gratitude has felt forced or thin lately, the answer is to go deeper into Christ, not merely to try harder to feel thankful. Be rooted in Him, and let thanksgiving abound.

Take Into The Day

Aim today not for a trickle of thanks but for an overflow. As you go deeper into Christ, in His Word, in remembering His grace, let thanksgiving abound and spill over into your words to God and to others. Be rooted, and overflow.

Prayer

Lord, root me and build me up in Christ, that I may abound in thanksgiving. Where my gratitude has felt thin and forced, take me deeper into You, and let thanks rise naturally and overflow. Make me a person who abounds with thanksgiving. Amen.
