The psalmist tells us how to come to God: Enter into His gates with thanksgiving, and into His courts with praise. Thanksgiving is the doorway, the way in to God's presence. We do not have to climb over a wall or sneak in through a side entrance; the gate stands open, and the way to walk through it is with a thankful heart. Gratitude is not only something we feel once we are near God; it is the very means by which we draw near.

This reorders how we begin our times with God. We often come to Him starting with our requests, our problems, our anxious list of needs, and there is a place for those. But the psalmist teaches us to enter first with thanksgiving and praise, to come through the gate of gratitude before we come to the matter of our needs. When we begin by thanking God for who He is and what He has done, our whole posture shifts; we approach Him not as anxious beggars but as grateful children, and our requests are framed by trust rather than fear.

Come to God today through the right gate. Before you bring Him your needs, enter with thanksgiving; before you ask, give thanks.

Lord, I enter Your gates with thanksgiving and Your courts with praise. Before I bring You my needs today, let me first be thankful to You and bless Your name. Reshape my approach to You, from anxious beggar to grateful child. Amen.
