Psalm 103:2
Bless the LORD, O my soul, and forget not all His benefits.

David talks to his own soul, stirring it up to gratitude: Bless the Lord, O my soul, and forget not all His benefits. The phrase "forget not" reveals our great problem with gratitude, not that God's benefits are few, but that we are so quick to forget them. Blessings received become blessings assumed, then blessings forgotten. Yesterday's answered prayer is today's expectation; this morning's mercy is overlooked by lunchtime. Ingratitude is often less a hard heart than a short memory.
So David does something deliberate: he preaches to his own soul, commanding it to remember. The verses that follow list the benefits he refuses to forget, God "forgives all your iniquities, heals all your diseases, redeems your life from destruction, crowns you with lovingkindness and tender mercies." Gratitude, he shows us, is partly a discipline of memory: the intentional act of recalling what God has done, rather than letting His benefits slip unnoticed into the past. A thankful heart is a heart that takes the trouble to remember.
Take David's cure for forgetfulness today. Talk to your own soul; stir it up; deliberately recall what God has done for you, and refuse to forget His benefits.
Take Into The Day
Counter your forgetfulness today by deliberately recalling God's benefits. Write down or call to mind specific things He has done for you, recent and long past, and let remembering them stir your soul to genuine thanks.
Prayer
Lord, like David I must preach to my own soul: bless the Lord, and forget not all His benefits. Forgive my short memory, which assumes and overlooks Your mercies. Help me remember what You have done, and stir my soul to grateful praise. Amen.
